Change to Adding Names

I just noticed a change in adding names. First was in Other Information, Add Alternate Name. Second was in Add Child. In both cases the Last Names is now before the First Names blocks to fill in. This also puts the names in this order on the list of family names.

Could I have clicked on some screen or program setting change? I did not see any posted changes in the New in Tree list.

As someone who uses the Hungarian language setting a lot, I was momentarily puzzled: well, yes, isn't that how it's supposed to b.… Oh. Right. Not if you're expecting English. :-]

As Alan said, check the language template. As far as I know, you needn't actually have changed this yourself previously; it's enough to have edited (and saved) a name with the different template already applied by someone else.

    Thank You both.

Some how it had gotten changed to Roman. If I had looked on the choices before, I had glossed over English. I did look in other posts in community, not finding this subject, I posted my problem. I am glad that others like you were of help.

The order of the first and last names is controlled by the language template. So if you choose a language such as Chinese, or Korean, or Tongan, or Hungarian (or a few others), the last name will be first.

So check that language drop-down, and if it is set to a language you weren't expecting, change it to English (or whatever the appropriate language is for names you are entering).

The reason you are seeing this same behavior in multiple places is that the system remembers the last name language template you used, and defaults to that same one for the next name you add.

On the Language nameplate? If I change the template from other to Hungarian or another language on my family member, does that change it for others who look at the same individual? (showing the lastname first)

@DRPGrigg Yes, the language template selection is saved with the name, so if you select a different template, you are making that change for everyone who will see that person in Family Tree.

That's a good thing — hopefully you are choosing the appropriate language template for that name, and so everyone will benefit from your correct selection.
