How do I submit a batch
I'm new here! I just completed indexing a directory. I indexed the image and tried to submit it and it quality control said I had over 1000 unfilled boxes.
My question is how do I get to the next image in the batch? Is there only 1 image in a batch?
Thank you for any help and/or advise!

Click on the trash can icon on your toolbar.
This box will come up. Select All blank entries and click Delete.
You will be left with the indexed entries and will be able to submit.

@Walker, Susan Leigh I am on Mountain Time and would be happy to walk you thru a batch if you'd like Do you still have your directory batch? Please give us the batch code in brackets next to the project title- it looks something like this [MQR3-735]

Just curious: when you started your first indexing batch, which parts of the instructions did you read? Did they all make sense to you at that point?
When you tried to submit this city directory, but couldn't, what steps did you take? Where should we ask FS to put the instructions about deleting unneeded entries, so that people like you can find them?
(They're currently in the General Indexing Guidelines.)

@Julia Szent-Györgyi Maybe an added or re-worded sentence in what's titled Exceptions at the start of the batch like right after: Also note, each batch contains one image. Each image contains up to 300 records. in which case you'd need to retitle that box 😎 Mary

I am also indexing a phone book. There was only one image. Yet when I finished it said I had over 1,ooo names to continue doing. There are no other images. I would be happy to finish them but where do I find them?

Julia, I did read all the instructions (I think) and did the little tutorial. But I am a visual learner and need to actually DO the activity before understanding all the directions.
To me the instructions are a little vague but I am nervous about doing indexing because I don't want to mess it up! I have had some things come up that I'm not sure what to do. I had one image come up where it was so light I couldn't read any of it so I hit the no extractable button and a box came up saying the image would be sent to the trash. So, I'm just waiting for it to expire and someone else can look at it. I'm not sure what to do with that image other than that.
To answer your question! I followed the directions of Ruth who answered my question quickly. I waited until I heard from someone before continuing. I don't remember reading that in the directions but I could have missed it.
I hope this all makes sense! I'm so new to family history and indexing. I've been to the family history library a couple of times to try and learn how to do it properly. Is there a class or something available for newbies like me? I would gratefully attend!

Some things, like deleting entries, are buried deep in the General Indexing Guidelines. I'm more than happy to show folks how to delete the entries as well as other things, like applying what's in the current field (like Smith in the surname) to every surname in the image.
As for the light batches, do not mark them as No Extractable Data. Simply return the batch and (hopefully) another indexer, who can read light information (I can't lol), will pick it up.
As for a class, there isn't one. The best way to cut you teeth right now is to continue indexing the directories and read (or re-read) the entire Project Instructions. The Instructions, or PI, can be found at the bottom of every entry or at the last button on the toolbar. I still refer to the PI occasionally and I'm from the old desktop indexing days.If you have any questions, feel free to ask. We were all newbies once.
What does suck right now, is the thin amount of projects available. I was told by a nice gentleman a few weeks ago that FS will go full-time AI at some point in the future. It may be a week from now or a year from now, but there will be communication from FS when this happens. RootsTech is next month and it might be that FS is holding projects from that. I have a question in to @Ashlee C. to see if she could look into what's going on, since FS usually had/has 30-40 projects at a time (depending on access and location). If you want to continue to gain experience, the National Archives' Citizen Archivist, Billion Graves and From the Page have other indexing opportunities.0 -
Thank you Mary! I might take you up on that!
Ok, I put the light batch back. I can't figure out how to do that when there is only 1 batch on my list. If I have 2 there is a box that says "return batch".
Thank you all for the information! I appreciate all your help!

It sounds like what would be most helpful for the visual learners is a more detailed tutorial? It has been a while, but as I recall, the existing one doesn't cover any of the most frequent questions here in the Community (such as deleting unneeded entries or returning a batch unindexed).
(If you've opened a batch but feel unable to do it for whatever reason, click Batch at the top left and choose Return Batch.)
