Widow or not?

I am indexing city directories for the first time. Since most entries have what seems to be their occupation following their name, does [Elsom Mary L] indicate she's a widow? The name right above her (Elsom John F) seems to be her husband since they are at the same address. Should I not make this deduction?

Furthermore, if you look down further to (Embrey Sylvania), it also makes me wonder is she the widow of an "L D" Embrey, or is that taking the assumption too far?

She is a widow of J F, who we do not index in her entry. J F is different from John F, John F could be her son, his brother, etc. It is not our job to assume anything.
