Oh that's weird.
My first thought was the relevant "St Mary's Church, Newchurch in Pendle, Lancashire, England" entries were on the same film as some "Childswickham, Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom" entries. But absolutely not - film number 1278872, according to the catalogue, has entries only for Cockerham and Newchurch, both very much in Lancashire.
I sampled a Dyson entry, as suggested above. The FS Citation reads:
"England, Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991", , FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J8R7-BWP : Wed Jul 10 01:43:50 UTC 2024), Entry for William Dyson, 16 Dec 1840.
The entry for that item reads:
Name
William Dyson
Sex
Male
Age
63
Birth Year (Estimated)
1777
Death Place
Lancashire, England
Event Type
Burial
Event Date
16 Dec 1840
Event Place
Childswickham, Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom
Event Place (Original)
Child's Wickham, Gloucestershire, England
Reference
Items 8-20
(The Community Editor insists that this is a table, refusing to honour "Paste Without Formatting". It looks fine to me now - your mileage may vary…)
The Death Place in this index entry is Lancashire but the Event Place (Original) is "Child's Wickham, Gloucestershire, England". I have no idea where that comes from. I can only point out (in case it helps anyone) that this comes from "England, Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991" and is not linked to any specific image - the original entry is in fact on image 1425 of 1841 of film 4239743.
For this entry in "England, Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991", the Indexing Batch = B39743-1. Whether that has relevance, I don't know but just in case…

@Adrian Bruce1 Thanks for adding the additonal evidence.
Regarding the origin of the error, there seem to have been some sweeping global alterations to places in certain burial records without any indication of what instigated the change. Until a researcher identifies a glaring error and reports it for correction, it will persist.
My greatest worry is with those records where the error is not obvious. Who knows how many records have been altered, apparently without verification or audit.

@Re Searching @Adrian Bruce1 Since this is a Legacy Collection FamilySearch usually does not correct data errors. It is confined to extraction records (Batch B9743-1) and that may be where the error originated. When I search Ancestry with the film #1278872 all the search results show the place name blank. That leads me to believe it was Gloucester when Ancestry acquired the original index from FamilySearch and they changed it to Lancashire on their records. I will ask engineering if anything can be done.

@SerraNola - I bow to your greater knowledge of FamilySearch and legacy collections!
On the other hand this particular issue appears where the Legacy Collection has been linked to a set of images that are surely not legacy. On reflection, I would have expected the images and an index to form part of the collection England, Lancashire, Parish Registers 1538-1910 - but they don't. Indeed, these images don't appear to have been indexed - as if someone decided to use the legacy index instead. Which I wouldn't have a problem with if it were correct…
See what you can do please, one way or another, because at the moment this stuff is plain wrong.
