I see the username Volunteer project popping up all over my tree.

When I click on it FamilySearch says

change made by authorized support staff or as a part of an update.

Most of these were entered in 2021 to 2023

no Updates are made. Many of them are of names in the 17th. 16th and even 15th century. I am the only one that has catholic church records in these time periods, because I was able to photograph the records with permission of the priest and have my own copy. LDS church does not have a copy of the Catholic Church records of northern Italy.

What is the purpose of this username

The issue is no updates are ever made. I once was able to contact the person behind the icon, but it has been turned off.

That particular user name is a special one created by FamilySearch for the Improve Place-Names project.

It may appear as if no changes were made, since the visible place name is unchanged — only the associated standardized place is changed.

If only all placename standardisation was done by human volunteers. Thanks for highlighting this project @Alan E. Brown.
