duplicate records
Hello, I just found this site, and I've been adding in the ancestors. My grandmothers birth record is entered under a different name. In trying to merge them, it made one of the records as a child instead. I cant disassociate them or merge them. It says I cant merge a parent and a child. I can't delete the incorrect name as someone else entered it and everything else is correct, so I don't want to lose the record.

You'll need to remove the incorrect relationship before you can merge the two profiles. To do that, go to the Family Members section on the Details page of either one, then click the Edit (pencil) button after the name of the one that appears as the child. On the resulting popup, click the Remove or Replace (trashcan) button below the name of the child. On the next popup, click the checkbox, then choose Remove and follow the rest of the prompts.
Once the relationship is removed, you can use Merge By ID to combine the profiles into one: copy the ID of the one you want to "merge-delete", then go to the profile you want to "keep", click Merge By ID in Tools (the last box in the right-hand column of the Details page), paste in the ID, and follow the prompts in the three merge screens. (I used quotes on "merge-delete" and "keep" because you aren't actually throwing anything away or keeping only the conclusions from one version. You can move things over, and even the stuff that you don't move will still be there, accessible [with some work] from the Change Log.)

Hi, STOP. Before you change, merge or delete anything you need to work out what is wrong.
You say your grandmother's birth record is entered under a different name, so my first question is "Are you looking at your grandmother's profile that somehow has the wrong name attached. Or are you looking at someone else's profile that somehow has some of your grandmother's information attached to it?" Or possibly some combination of these.
If your grandmother is deceased and you share her PID here (the seven character code near her name that looks something like A2C4-1B3 ) I'm sure someone here will help you to work out what the problem is.

I have found that my mothers name is incorrect as well. The birth record has her father and mother and my moms date of birth but lists her as Pauline instead of Carmen. I fixed that by attaching. However, for my grandmother, Insela De Leon GSV6-QP8 it showed Louisa deleon g59k-mpl as a child but looks resolved now.

"… but looks resolved now." I'm afraid not. @Edward2730
Part of the problem is there are two users actively working on these profiles at the same time. Every time you 'correct' something, they try to put it back. You'll see their name against lots of the most recent changes. Click on it and 'Chat'.
"… Insela De Leon GSV6-QP8 (should be GSC6-QP8) it showed Louisa deleon g59k-mpl as a child …" Somehow in trying to merge them you made them mother and daughter, then the other user fixed that and you went ahead and merged them. Unfortunately that was an error as Insela and Louisa are not the same person. They were sisters, born 1904 and 1906. They both appear on the 1910 census. Now, lots of Louisa's sources and information are attached to Incela's profile (1920, 30, 40 and 50 census to start with). I could suggest how to go about this but that just adds another finger in the pie. Try talking to the other user and work out what needs fixed first, then if neither of you know how to, come back here and ask. (And five different people will give you five different answers.)
"I have found that my mothers name is incorrect as well. The birth record has her father and mother and my moms date of birth but lists her as Pauline instead of Carmen." The source that you have attached, "Texas, Birth Index, 1903-1997," lists her as Pauline as that's what it says (actually Paulina) on the birth certificate, which is available on FamilySearch but is not yet attached. So it's not an error in the Birth Index. I did wonder about a twin that perhaps didn't survive but there's nothing marked in the 'Twin/Triplet' or 'Number In Order Of Birth' box on the birth certificate, so happy to discount that. I think the most likely explanation is that your grandparents simply changed their minds about what to call the baby after the birth was registered. Do you have a birth certificate for your mother with the name 'Carmen' on it? Check the date it was registered and that might give you a clue.
