No record date
I am indexing a Petition for Citizenship {MQ2K-V81} and I can't see a record date anywhere on the form. In this case, do I just say "Blank"?

The record date is on the back of the document. You will use the +1 Image Reference Image. The date will be located above the Oath and will follow Subscribed and sworn to before me by the above-named Petitioner. To access the reference images, click the bottom icon on your vertical toolbar.
In Project Instructions —> General Indexing Guidelines, it tells you what to do when the record (in this case, the Petition for Citizenship) spans two images.0 -
Sorry…I'm full of questions. I never knew there were additional images! Do I only reference these if I can't find something or if something is unreadable? On a normal batch, is it normal not to go into these additional images? (I need you on speed dial, erutherford!!)

Yes, you will access the reference images when the info is on the backside of a document or you're not sure about a spelling. Say you're indexing a record that has the record date on the back of the document. 7 out of 10 times, this type of Petition will be the petition on Image 1 with the record date on Image 2. If Image 2 is the petition, you will use the +1 reference image to get the record date. No other information from the +1 reference image is indexed as it is Image 1 of the next batch where the indexer will index the Oath.
There are four different types of Petitions that we (mostly) index. The earliest one, which was used up until 1930(ish). That one has the record date at the very bottom of the Petition. The next type is from 1930 to 1940(ish). This petition will also have the date at the bottom of the Petition. Then the next one is post 1940(ish), then finally, there is the type that is your batch. This type is rare, but it does happen. The record date for both of these types is on the back of the document above the Oath (the Oath's date belongs to the Oath only) with it reading, in part Subscribed and sworn to before me by the above-named Petitioner.
What I'd advise first with figuring out words or letters is to look through the batch to see if there's another word or letter that matches what you're unsure of. Eight out ten times you'll find it that way. If not, use the reference images.
Please use the reference images only when you need to. Normal batches, where what you need is within the batch will not need the reference images. If you cannot find what you need, mark the field blank by either using Ctrl+B or the fourth icon from the left on your toolbar. Do not index the word blank, as it will be marked as an error in review.
Don't worry about questions. I had a ton of questions when I started 10 years ago.0 -
If I'm looking on these "additional images" and see information that could be included on the document I'm indexing, is it ok to add the information? In the one I'm doing, the name is listed as "Fred", but in the additional images I see that it is "Alfred", can I add that as "Fred Or Alfred"?

If Alfred is on a different document; say you're working a Declaration and Alfred is on the Petition in the reference images, you will not add it to the current document. The Declaration, Petition and Oath are all separate steps in the Naturalization process, so Alfred belongs to the different document.
