Is the current descending order layout for responses to the OP an accident or by design?
I thought I'd seen some discussion on the topic but can't find the post. Perhaps a moderator / FamilySearch employee could advise if this arrangement (in Community) is here for keeps.
Personally, I prefer the old, ascending order (hope I've got it the right way round!), as it's far easier to follow a thread through by starting with the original response and working through the subsequent ones.
Of course I can see the advantage of the current presentation in not having to scroll through lots of posts, one might have already read, to get to the latest one. But, on balance, I definitely prefer how things were. It's like when I read a BBC news item online and start by seeing the latest update, then have to carry on and on until I find the context of the article when I finally get to the original post!

Hi Paul. I saw a mod comment that they were trying to figure out what happened to cause it.

I agree that this is not a desirable change, and I also (vaguely) recall the mod post about it not being intentional. (But I can't remember what thread in what category it was in.)
Unless there's only one comment, "newest on top" means scrolling through every comment four times: once all the way down through everything to find the bottom, then up through the oldest comment to find its beginning, then down through it to read it, then up through it and through the second-oldest comment to find its beginning, etc.
And the categories and groups are still assuming "newest last": on multi-page threads that you've previously read, the link goes to the highest-numbered page.

The links on notifications don't currently work correctly, this cannot be in any way intentional. It makes any multi-page thread very hard to work with.

And this morning, I have noticed that the list of our past comments, formerly available on each individual's profile, is now truncated to just the last 10. That's disappointing and unhelpful.

Seems like the vendor is not collaborating with FamilySearch over these issues.
I think many of us have given up on being able to paste images in the previous, straightforward manner and as for Suggest An Idea…. still broken after five months? Any further loss of functionality will present serious worries as to the future of the Community forum.

And just to add another effect in case it gives anyone any clues - if you try to add a comment, the comments box is still at the bottom, while the last post, which might be the one you're commenting on, is at the opposite end of the thread.
I'd take an informed guess that the underlying software is perfectly capable of working in either direction but, somehow, something, somewhere, has messed up the order of the posts in a thread and only that.
Although Áine's last comment is disturbing for the theory of a single, unwanted change.

Wow! thanks Paul. I'd been searching for the right place to ask the same question, and you've done it already. I'll happiily join all those like Marvin Gaye who want to know What's going on?
With regard to the current layout: I remember my old teacher's words, "Show your working"

Looks as if the comment ordering issue has been fixed and notifications now link to the relevant comment as they should.

Thanks for highlighting that, Mandy. Grateful to @Stephanie V. and anyone else who played a part in getting this fixed.

AND the list of comments on a user's profile page is restored. Many thanks for fixing that. I rely on that list for returning to a thread easily.

Thanks, everyone, for your patience while we worked on this issue. I know it was so irritating and we quickly got our vendor to fix it. They applied a fix that seems to have repaired a number of issues that we were having. Unfortunately, we still have some outstanding issues that are more complex than this one. Thanks for your patience!
