I sincerely hope the managers of the city directories project are able to make legible copies of the unreadable ones. Such a waste to not be able to index them.

If you have ever used the hard copies of the old directories at your local genealogy library, you will understand why many pages are not legible. Usually, it's not the fault of the scanning equipment or the operator.

The old directories are printed on very thin paper, meaning there is often bleed-through. The directories were prepared as quickly as possible, to publish while addresses were still valid. There is often ink transfer from page to page because the ink wasn't dry when the pages were stacked and bound.
