Confused about Directories?

The indexing instructions for city directories say to index only residential directories, not business directories. I pull up a project and the top of the image just says "City Directory" and the city name, but all the entries just have 1 person's name, and then lists an occupation type and address. No wife or other names. So, would that be a business directory or a city directory that lists each head of household and includes his or her occupation?

Without seeing the document image, and going off of personal experience, some city directories were formatted this way. Unless the name is of a business of some type, I would recommend transcribing the individual (personal) names as instructed.

If it lists something like Joe Smith, 1234 Main Street, barber, that is a residential listing. The same applies if it were Joe Smith (Ethel), 1234 Main Street, barber. A business listing is something like John Clay & Sons.
