How to save index file

How do I save the files I index and can I save them if I have to leave and come back?

    Records that have already been indexed and submitted cannot be saved.

    Records that have been indexed but not submitted are automatically saved at certain intervals so they will be there, in your queue, until they are either finished or pulled back by the system.
