New Feature Ideas: Colors, Buttons, Icons
💡 New Concept Ideas: Colors, Buttons, Icons
We are grateful to the community for your continued feedback and support as we continue our journey to make Source Linker the best experience it can be. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your thoughts.
Over the the last few months, we've received lots of feedback about our use of color and how we can better communicate actions and states. Our team at FamilySearch has been working hard to learn from your feedback and come up with some possible ways of adjusting our colors, buttons, and icons to be more intuitive and to help communicate actions and states better.
Below you will see 5 different proposals regarding possible color, icon, and button size changes we are considering. We’d love to get your feedback on these proposals. Will these concepts help to clear up confusion and address your specific concerns about colors? Do these changes help make the experience more clear and understandable? We'd appreciate your candid feedback about these ideas.
The 5 proposals include:
Circular Button Color Change
Smaller Button and Avatar Size
A New “Attached” State Green Color
New “Compare” and “Attach” Icons
New “Attached” State Concepts (Attached and Detach Links)
Our goal is to continue to make source linker a powerful, more intuitive experience for all users and your feedback will help us to achieve that goal.
Thank you for your help,
Erik, FamilySearch Source Linker Team

- 1) Circular button color change.
- I'm neutral on this proposal.
2) Smaller buttons and avatars
I like the change. The buttons are still large enough to click easily but are not as distracting and don't pull attention away from the text. The smaller ones make the lines look less crowded.
3) New green attach color
I think the original lighter color has better contrast for reading the text.
4) New Compare and Attach Icons
The arrow is kind of nice, but will it get confused with the arrow that moves information from the source to the profile? Spelling out that you click to both compare and attach makes it plain what the action will be so I do like that. Regarding the Detach link next to the icon, this sets up a situation where the icon has no connection with the accompanying text so I think I like the current version better.
5) Attach State Concept
Moving the detach link to the bottom of the box solves my concern in #4, but aside from the spouse box, is there enough room to move it down and have it look like it was done on purpose or will it just make the line look poorly formatted?

3) New green attach color
I think the original lighter color has better contrast for reading the text.
My experience is just the opposite. The text against the new color is more distinct and defined (for me), which makes it easier for me to read. The lighter color has a brightness (for lack of a better word) that is causing it to 'clash' or 'fight for attention.' (sorry, words are elusive this morning). I provided my feedback by email already, so I won't repeat it all here.
eta: If opinions are strongly divided, I wonder if it would be possible to offer both versions as a choice of color schemes? I've seen this on forums (a dark or night theme seems popular). But I've no idea if that is even feasible or not.

- Circular Button Color Change - #4 is a better fix
- Smaller Button and Avatar Size - much better (complements the color changes) good to have, but not essential.
- A New “Attached” State Green Color - Yes!
- New “Compare” and “Attach” Icons - These both are better (more clear) at showing what they do. Initially I liked "COMPARE AND ATTACH", but "COMPARE" is probably enough because once you click it you get an "ATTACH" button
- New “Attached” State Concepts (Attached and Detach Links) - Concept 1 is an improvement over current; shows they are attached but allows the Detach action. Concept 2 is a step backward.
I was going to suggest using cyan for the "ADD" but seeing the two different greens (on #5) reinforces what is happening. Light green for the 2 different types of Adds and Dark green for Attached.

I like the changes/colors. I work with a visually impacted individual. I believe the changes will be helpful to her.

- Honestly I prefer the current colors of the buttons
- Neutral
- I like the new green, though for some reason now the logo looks yellow.
- I like the dark green check with a detach button next to it (I'm assuming the check would be an indicator and not the button you use to detach). I'm not so sure about the arrow though, and I prefer it only saying "Compare". It's more straightforward since there's already a button to attach.
- I like concept 1 more than concept 2, other than the fact the detach button has been pushed down, making it a little harder to see.

- Circular Button Color Change- The button color change works.
Smaller Button and Avatar Size- This change is a success for me. Both become less distracting.
A New “Attached” State Green Color- The background color is much better than the bile green currently used, but it could be a few shades lighter to show more contrast
New “Compare” and “Attach” Icons- The changes work for me.
New “Attached” State Concepts (Attached and Detach Links)- The attached button intent is very clear. The relocation of the "Detach" icon is an improvement.
