Greek or not

Hello everyone,

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. If not, please let me know. I'm conducting research into my family history and have come across the surname "Jianinas," which has piqued my curiosity. While my great-great-grandfather was born and raised in France, the surname "Jianinas" doesn't strike me as typically French. I've noticed that the prefix "-as" is common in Greek (or Cypriot?) surnames, and it reminds me of the city Ioánnina in Greece, which is often transcribed as “Janina” or “Jannina” in French.

I may be completely wrong. I would love to hear other opinions.

Thank you in advance!

Ludo

I did a quick search in Ancestry for records containing the surname Jianinas. 100% French sources on the first page. Second page I start seeing US sources such as passenger lists and naturalization records and the spelling is slightly different. When I did a search in FamilySearch, that spelling is associated with French records.
