Is there a way to find a friend who passed away years ago and has never used or created an account with family search? I would love to do temple work for them.

The way we find anyone. Going into the original records and searching. Probably the first places to start looking are Find-A-Grave, Billion Graves, and Genealogy Bank.

Do keep in mind that you will need to have permission from an undivorced spouse, a parent or a child to do any ordinances. See: https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/can-i-request-proxy-temple-ordinances-for-a-friend

You may be able to "Find" the deceased's profile if they are already recorded on the FamilySearch's Family Tree by signing in to your FamilySearch account and going to Family Tree, then click "Find." There you can enter in Search criteria to locate your deceased friend if someone else has already created a profile for them. There is a possibility they have a profile since your friend passed away some years ago. As Gordon Collett points out there are specific requirements for requesting temple ordinances.
