I know some changes have been happening with the indexes, however, Rutherford County, Tennessee now shows Gibson county as an additional county in between Rutherford and Tennessee.

if I look at the headers on the images, it says in the county of Rutherford, Tennessee. However, the index has changed to say Rutherford, Gibson, Tennessee.

There is a city called Rutherford in the county of Rutherford.

There is a County of Rutherford.

There is also a Rutherford, Gibson, Tennessee, which is halfway across the State of Tennessee.

The problem is that the indexes for Rutherford County, Tennessee say “Rutherford, Gibson, Tennessee.

Is this a temporary issue while work has been going on with the indexes? Or is this an error?

@Sue Maxwell Thank you for reporting the error in the indexed data for the United States Census, 1880. We have confirmed the problem and reported it to the group that can make a correction. Unfortunately, they have a large backlog of similar issues they are dealing with, so we cannot predict how long it will take for you to see a correction.
