Indexing a School Census, such as "US, Montana, Flathead—School Census, 1903–1969[MQ6G-YWY]" (line 4), is the Step Parent handled any differently (such as keeping the parentheses)?

My response to the guest was to treat the step-parent the same as the biological parent, but drop the "step". But now, I'm wondering...

You were correct. The step is dropped and they are a parent.

If the biological parent is Joe Smith and the step parent is John Doe, index it as:

    GN: Joe Or John

    SN: Smith Or Doe

Parenthesis are not used in indexing. Indexing multiple names, either sur, given or both (and their variants) are seperated by the word "or". This is covered under Project Instructions/General Indexing Guidelines/Alias Names and now often times in the Names Field Helps (purple question mark).

Parentheses are on the list of characters not allowed in name fields in the Family Tree.

The following characters are not allowed:\@#$%&*_+=|~/><[]{}();:0123456789

If we were to index using those prohibited characters, it would cause an issue for those who need those records.
