Lineage question

Father Jacob E Powers:MCHT-3MB. He is my direct line. I am working on his daughter Bessie Alma Powers:GMC1-D5X. If Jacob is my direct line, why does his daughter not display as a continuation of that direct line? Instead, the system shows the lineage from Jacob's spouse Emma, who also is my direct line through my mother's side.

The "Show Relationship" tool only shows the shortest path. (No, I don't know how it chooses if there are two paths of equal length.)
