US, New York, Tompkins—Indexes to Land Records, 1816–1860 [Part B]
Hello! In my batch I am working on now, the "mortgagor" and "mortgagee" columns appear as:
Mortgagor----Mortgagee | Mortgagee----Mortgagor
as the headings on each page. I am noticing that all of the left hand names start with "S" regardless of whether or not it's a mortgagee or mortgagor. Do you think the recorder wrote the names in the same format as each other, not as the column headings? (So they wrote the mortgagor in the first column and the mortgagee in the second column every time even though the printed headings indicate otherwise?) Hopefully I made that make sense!
I am recording them under what matches the column headings printed in the book, but as I started the second page I thought maybe I shouldn't be doing that. This is the first batch of this specific project I have worked on, but the grantee/grantor ones I have done in the past are listed based on the first letter of the last name of the Grantors every time, so maybe this project is similar? Thanks for any input!
