Please can a moderator check the register for birth/baptisms/deaths in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa in the 1860s, 1870s etc.
There is a general error: the entire record, and therefore every entry have been indexed as death records, but they are actually birth/baptism records. I have personal records of a number of relatives; I know that they were born/baptised on these dates.
Here is one example
"South Africa, Church of the Province of South Africa, Parish Registers, 1801-2004", database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6JZT-SD6D : 3 June 2023), Preston Hamilton Stewart, 1874.

Diana, like the Batch states, this is an index of Baptisms and Marriages. See the bottom right corner.
Like on the example here under, I know this is not the actual baptism or marriage record, because the true and legal record is on the page number and person number stated on the right hand side of the index page.
According to the indexing rules, this must be indexed because the Project Instructions says if there is a name, date and place on the page, it should be indexed, and the rules cannot be changed.
If you do not have what you are looking for, can you please give me your family's name and birth date, also the place where the baptism, membership or wedding took place and I will try and find the actual written source.

I happen to disagree with the "answer" given by @Hester Korff Wolmarans
By looking at the record you've used as an example, you are right that it has been incorrectly indexed. It is the responsibility of the Index and Review Project to change the record template from that of Burial to Birth/Baptism, which would then reflect in the wording of the record (which clearly says Death, and Burial in the information) which you've told us is wrong.
What's more, although the "Edit" button is highlighted and permits edits to the details themselves, it will not resolve your issue.
I am tagging moderator @Maile L to investigate this, and hopefully send the batch back to the Review team for corrections. If you have the full record image of the birth/baptism (this image is just an index of the file) please attach it, so that the team can compare and see that the error was made.

Hi, I want to explain, I only looked at the page after opening the batch that Diana Coates had given as an example, and replied only to what I saw was an index page.
I should have done the whole inquiry first and then replied. I will come back with an proper answer to sate my case for Diana.

Please go to Preston Hamilton Steward's personal family search information page, where you have added the sources. The two sources of the baptism and death explains what I have meant.
What KJUSTB have said is correct, the indexer/reviewer should have corrected it. The indexers or reviewers are volunteers who help to input the info to make it available for the family and public to see. Not all of them knows exactly where and what to look for and they must follow the project instructions. I can see this was an indexing mistake, because there is nothing on the index book page that suggest what the event is all about, just that it happened in St Peters. Some do not go further to investigate what the record is all about.
My argument was that you cannot index these pages, because it is not the original handwritten sources to show the family. Now your case is the exact example of why I have this argument. You and no one wants to get a page of indexes with just names and dates on it, and that is why you have come for helping to correct your family's info. See attachment number 1 the index page, and number 2 the original handwritten page.
Number 1 is the page that you have queried.
Number 2, the original, where all the info is and that is the one that the family wants to see. This record is what the indexers should index because it has all the info they want on one page:
Hope you all understand what I mean.

Hi @Diana Coates. At this time, the capability to edit this collection is limited to a small number of fields, none of which lists the event type. We understand that errors like this are frustrating, and a new function is being rolled out that allows editing to be done in all fields in a transcription. There is no time line on when this new correction function will be applied to every collection. You may want to check back every once in a while and see it the Edit button provides more options. Until then, you can add a note to the source information explaining the error and delete the burial tag on the source (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/G7N4-9JD)
or create a new source with the correct info using the Source Box (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9T4M-TNQ)
How do I create a new source in my source box?
Please let us know if you need further instructions. Maile 🙂
