A note about New York Naturalizations

I just finished reviewing four batches of the New York Naturalization project. All four had Oath of Allegiances and all four OOA's were marked as No, No Extractable Data. I had the same issue earlier when five OOA's were marked NNED.

OOA's are to be indexed. They are part of the list that is located in What to Index in the Project Instructions.

Index only the following types of documents: Declarations of intention, petitions for naturalization, military petitions, oaths of allegiance, naturalization certificates, final orders, alien registrations, repatriation records, certificates of admission, name change records, and naturalization cards. In addition, index documents that are similar to these form-types.

I understand the need to contribute, but please indexers, take the time to read the pop-up box, Project Instructions and the Field Helps. They are there to make sure you correctly index batches (and reviewers don't go nuts).

Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention,

I haven't found any marked like that but have other mistakes made simply because someone didn't read the instructions please take the time to read all instructions this isn't a race our Heavenly Father wants each record to be right

Thank you and know that you will be blessed for your efforts

I am reviewing US-New York-Eastern District Naturalization Records, (Part G) (MQXV-SNK). As a reviewer, I have been confused about the "Do not index certificates...since we were not given an example of a certificate of loyalty. Is the entry on the right of the first image, which is a copy of the original OOA with a note at the bottom stating, "I...do certify that the foregoing is a true copy of the original oath of intention..." In my mind, this is a certificate of loyalty, OR is it a certificate of Intention? I have reviewed it both ways. If the indexer completes the entry, I have reviewed it and marked the boxes; if the indexer did not index the entry, I agree and leave only one entry. There are more and more of these coming through, so I would appreciate a clear direction. Should this be indexed or not; is it a certificate of loyalty or not? Thank you so much. Like all of our indexers/reviewers, I want my work to be accurate.

It's an OOA. The indexer did this correctly, minus the Record Place, which is New York, United States. There is an example of how to index this is attached to How To Index An Oath of Allegiance under Project Instructions/What To Index.

Thank you. I always read the Project Instructions...always. However, because of the word certify in the bottom note and a seal, and not having seen an example of a certificate of OOA, I wasn't sure, especially when I looked forward and saw that there was the original OOA for the same person. Thank you for clarification!

Do the Oaths even if there aren't any dates? Seems like a Complete waste of time.

I'm sorry that you feel that OOAs are a waste of time, but yes, you will index OOAs that have no date.

Just curious. I have been doing them all.

Another issue. Should we enter the Record Numbers on the Intention records? They are always the same as the Petitions.

If the DEC is for the same person on the same image, you will index the PET number. If it is not for the same person--or if the DEC is on a different image, you will enter both the DEC number on the first image, then you will index the PET number (they should not be the same) on the second image.

Here is an exampe of the DEC and the PET on different images. I have circled the Record Number for both images.

Usually the indexer enters that number even though it is for the Petition. I have been BLANKING whenever they do that.
