BUG -- The edit window is not usable.

    Cheryl Viering

April 4, 2023 edited July 11, 2024 in Family Tree

If I try to edit vital facts on the person page, a window opens with only a teeny, tiny, box showing the information to be edited. It is about the height of half a character. That makes it impossible for me to find the info I want to edit, or be sure that I am typing in the correct field.

The same happens with the add child, and add spouse, functions. Those windows are impossible to use.

Can you share a screenshot? I certainly don't see that. Are you using the App on a phone or tablet or are you on a browser on a PC/Mac?

Opening the birth vital to edit in this example, using Chrome on Windows 10, both fully updated:

And have you joined and posted in the New Person Page group? https://community.familysearch.org/en/group/316-new-person-page

MacBook Pro with Firefox. The Mac is old & not updated. Firefox updated recently. But I don't have the energy to look up rev numbers. Everything worked great the day before, then I got forced into using the new person page. Now I can't edit.

I can move the edit box around, but I can't change the size of it.

Maybe one of our Mac experts can help. I haven't used a Mac in a few years. And please post your issue on the New Person Page group so the developers can take a look. @lyleblunttoronto1 FYI.

This is already more work than it is worth. I reported it. Fix it or don't.

With this horrible new format, it probably won't matter to me if it isn't fixed.

I'm sorry you feel that way, @Cheryl Viering. It would take less time to join the New Person Page group and copy/paste your issue there than we've spent in this thread.

I can't fix it - I'm not a staff developer. But, I've tagged one of the primary members of the development staff.

@Cheryl Viering I would love to fix this issue. I'm sure it is plaguing other users. Could you offer me some details on your computer. The operating system version and browser version.

I have the same problem with a desktop version of Linux Mint more than five years old, and an "up to date" version 78.7.1esr (64-bit) Firefox browser.

      1) Clicking on the Edit icon opens a box which almost as wide as the browser window, but no more than one line of text can be seen. The scroll function works, but looking at one line at a time is like using the old typewriters with LED screens only one line at a time.

      2) The Edit box can be moved with the mouse, but pops back to its initial position when the mouse is released.

      3) The Edit box is not resizable - but I discovered that if I resize the width of the browser window to less than about six inches (making a window shaped more like a 'smart phone'), then the Edit box fills that narrow window and the length of the box expands so that all the fields become readable and usable.

This work around changing the window width back and forth to do edits is better than having to log on with both the desktop and a 'phone' to use for editing, the latter which has Edit boxes that work the way they should when used in both the App and Desktop mode of its Firefox browser, or to edit with the Family Tree App.

I would check to see if you have enlarged your browser viewing settings. I have found that if I expand beyond 100% (so my dad can see things better) it leaves some things exactly to size and others get expanded. In this example I'd say the box is limited on size, but the text is enlarged and therefore doesn't fit. This may not be your issue...but I have noted it a couple of times. This is also affected if you use enlarged settings in the accessibility mode of your computer.

It shouldn't matter what my browser magnification is. I'm not going to change my settings back and forth for one site. It is the job of programmers to handle situations that should be expected.
