What area do I go to to research French records?
I am going to France in May & would like to research my family. I need some advice what area to start (Department, civil registry or Town hall). My only information is my Ancestor (Charles SAILLEUR) was born in Calais, Bretagne, France circa 1843. Are you able to give me a starting point please?
Kind Regards, Cassie Saddington

@Cassie Saddington I would recommend that you join and post your query in the France research group. https://community.familysearch.org/en/group/79-france-research There, others may be able to help you narrow your focus and recommend locations. There are many records for Bretagne in the FamilySearch catalog, and you may be able to do preliminary research before your trip to help plan the best places to search once you are on the ground. https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bkeywords%3Abretagne%20%2Bavailability%3AOnline&page=1&year0=1800

@Cassie Saddington The website The French Genealogy Blog (in English) contains links to some of the online French Departmental Archives
It seems as though the relevant Department for Calais is Pas-De-Calais, No.62 on the list within the mentioned website.
