what does this mean ? ..."These 2 people can be merged but only in this order ".. What is the significance of the order if all sources and info will be combined to the persons' record on the right hand side of the computer screen? I am a consultant, but not a church member, in the Valencia California Family History Center and also a member of a Facebook group "Family History User Group". This question came up and there were so many different explanations given that I thought I should find out because I have seen this before as I merge on my own. In the past, I would just merge without question, but now I see that I should know WHY this is said.

If it would be easier to tell me the reason rather than responding in writing, you can call me

Thank you for all you do in the Help Center.

One reason I heard in a presentation put on by someone from FamilySearch was that the program tries to keep as the survivor the person with the most complete information or the longest Change Log or the most sources since that person tends to have the longest history in Family Tree.

This hasn't happened to me in quite a long while. All I do know is that when I make merges nowadays the system seems to allow me to do it regardless of circumstances - e.g. even if the surviving ID originally had hardly any detail / relatives / sources attached beforehand, compared to the ID that becomes "deleted".

So, no, I've never worked out any logical reason for this message appearing.

I had two this week that showed that message about the merging only in a specific direction. One was in the direction I had selected, and one was the opposite.
