Access through the portal can sometimes be touchy - IOW you may lose that portal access in the space of a few seconds. I would suggest exiting, refreshing, and trying again. I know sometimes I have to try to a few times to make sure the portal is active.

I do not know the background to the decisions, but I believe when the requirement was introduced to log into FamilySearch on home computers from 13 December 2017, using personal details, the same requirement was also introduced for users to log in at FamilySearch Centers and Affiliate Libraries using their own personal details.

check the chrome extension as it may not be recognizing you are at a FamilySearch center.

I realise now that in my post above I misread the question, so my reply above is not relevant. However, I can no longer edit my reply.

The portal is working fine and recognising the FSC. Reset cookies etc and tried several times. I tried Ancestry and Geneanet and can go straight into searches with the portal showing as the "user". It's just findmypast that asks for a login. OK for me as I have an account, but non-member patrons have problems.

Thank you for your suggestion. I eventually found an article that said to ignore the login requirement. However, the next step suggested that because of my location I proceed through the Australian version of findmypast, which still asked for a login. Some trial and error by a colleague found that choosing the American option allowed the search to proceed without logging in.
