March 1 edited March 2 in Family Tree

On a marriage document add, a new date and place with less detail supersedes a more accurate date and place previously entered. The user should be able to choose between the new information and the old information.

If it's a more accurate date for the same event, edit the event. Don't add another copy.

Julia Szent-Györgyi It depends on what other information is on the marriage document that has a less accurate date and place. It could have other valuable information, such as complete names of parents of both bride and groom, or the ages of bride and groom, and even places of birth of all of the above. I have found multiple marriage documents for the same event that seemed to have different purposes in being published. However, I would create custom events with the docs that have the less accurate date and place so that all information can be seen. You want the marriage event to have the correct doc tagged and custom events to have the others. Hope that made sense.

You should add all of the documents, of course. But if there was only one event, then there should be only one event entered in the couple relationship area, not different versions of it for each different source.

I have previously requested that marriage data cannot be carried over during the source linking process. It is best for the researcher to evaluate the different sources relating to the marriage and decide which is the best to be (manually) inputted. This prevents earlier dates (possibly relating to marriage licence / banns records) populating the Relationship Events area, as well as appearing (earliest dated by default) as the event displayed on the Details page(s).
