When I find a relatives at rootstech in the app, if I add them as a contact I can no longer see how we are related. In fact it then says there is no relationship.

Here is the direct URL for the Contacts list: https://www.familysearch.org/groups/contacts/
You can navigate to it by going to your username in the top right corner of the browser. Click your username and you will see the Contacts list.
Perhaps the other user you added as a contact has turned off the relationship feature?
