Re SOURCES attached to Individuals in the FS Tree
Dear FS.
May I ask you please to open the page for Joseph Sunderland (1 July 1752-14 June 1824),
I.D. K48N-HWS, and then click on Sources, where you will see there are 87 entries,
65 of which relate to Ancestry, access to which requires the payment of a subscription,
which I and an unknown number of other FS users do not have, and in my case have
no current intention of purchasing.
QUESTION - does it make SENSE to permit huge numbers of Ancestry references to
be added to individuals which can only be viewed by subscribers to Ancestry ?????
Kind regards,
RS

Opinion/Possible Solutions: Yes it does make sense. Attach records from any record provider/custodian. As long as the source citation is accurate I don't really care where it came from. I do care about the transcript of the record if an image is not accessible by me. Thus the suggested Idea to create a dedicated Transcript/conclusion Abstract area - or entry of such in Source Notes - floating around in Ideas somewhere...
I ran into a situation here in Community the other day where Ancestry records were helpful and I was able to Share the image links directly from Ancestry. Perhaps if FamilySearch and Ancestry agree that source citations on FamilySearch are required to have that shared link - that might be a good solution for your Idea as well.
This Idea may also bring up the Idea of grouping Sources - such that all Ancestry sources could be collapsible/expandable under an Ancestry heading - such that if one is not a subscriber or doesn't want to look at them - one doesn't need to.

To Genthusiast,
Ancestry will not agree to a free of charge citation link from FS, as that would provide
a back-door entry into Ancestry for non-subscribers.
However, your suggestion of Ancestry Sources with an "expand/collapse" feature
would deal with the problem very nicely. In the quoted example that would reduce
the number of the Sources from the present 87 to 23 ( i.e. 22 +1 Ancestry = 23).
I think you would agree that for those like me who do not have membership of Ancestry,
seeing 65 inaccessible Ancestry Sources in a list of 87 is simply not constructive or
helpful.
Kind regards,
RS

@robert stansfield Ancestry does offer a free view share option. It takes the viewer to that record only and does not offer a back-door to any other record.
takes the viewer to a single death record only.

Yes, Áine shows by example what I referred to - many records on Ancestry will have a Share URL option. If FamilySearch and Ancestry determined that all Sources linked in either would have such - then users of either could view images on those URI/URLs without issue. The same goes for all record providers/custodians (I guess I can wish for a completely unified/sharing genealogical community for Christmas - many have come a long way - Thank you!). I'll attach an example to show what I meant on Joseph Sunderland:
For example: The first User Created Source (those are identified by the globe icon) -
If instead it had the following Share URL it should show you the image of the record.
As it stands currently the user attaching an Ancestry source to a FamilySearch Person Profile - needs to know how to include the Share URL - but if Ancestry and FamilySearch agreed to always include Share URL in cited sources - then it would already be attached (yes I think that would be an enhancement).
Also I note (as correction to what I said as an enhancement above - it already exists - Sorry and Thank you FamilySearch development)-
you can rid/collapse the Ancestry Sources currently by selecting Options> uncheck the User Created

To Genthusiast,
My Options Box shows only - Sort: Chronological Order
Custom Order
"Supports drag and drop...", and
Show: Unfinished Attachments.
I am using Windows 7.
Can you comment please ?

@robert stansfield Are you using the New Person Page? Your description sounds like the old/previous person page.
Previous/Old/Current at the Top with New at the Bottom.

Áine's right - you have to use the new person pages to sort this way.

To All,
Thanks: for me anything to do with inaccessible Ancestry is just "noise", which I don't want
to be distracted by, or have to waste my time with. Unchecking the User Created button
completely wipes every single Ancestry Source, although the total number of Sources
is still shown as 87.
Kind regards,
RS
