Place Research allows you to look for places your ancestors are from in the FamilySearch Standards Place database. If the place name is found, it will show you information about the place. Such as its official name, official full name, and any variant names such as The Big Apple for New York City, or the Big Easy for New Orleans. It will also pin your place on a map and provide the latitude and longitude. If your place is not found in the database you can use the feedback link at the bottom of the page SUGGEST A NEW PLACE link at the top left corner of the page to request it be added . You can also use the feedback link to provide new feature requests or tell us how to make the tool easier to use.
There is no feedback link available. If you find a place - you can use the Improve This Place feature to request place metadata changes:
WHAT'S NEW
Current Version : Last Update :
Recently added - new, cool features:
• Export search results to CSV file. >Comment: where is this undocumented feature?
• Search box can be dragged around the screen. >Comment: I do not see this capability - the column is stuck on the left-hand side of the screen and cannot be moved (unless there is some Easter egg keystrokes I am unaware of).
• History section in the Place Details dialog.
• Improved and simplified user interface.
• Consolidated Help dialog. >Comment: where is this consolidated? Clicking the circle with question mark help icon results in nothing related/consolidated.
Other Comments/Ideas:
First thank you FamilySearch for providing this app - it should become very useful to users - in helping them find and contribute to Standardized placenames!
But, where is the documentation to some of these undocumented features? For example, how many know that if you use the Search Within: [place] command in the Search field - that will result in a list of all places currently contained in [place]? That should help those wishing to contribute to more efficiently know what is left to contribute to [place].
The terms of service clearly indicate KML files can be created. Will this capacity be extended to users or can users submit KML?
I would really like the types of places that can be suggested to be flexible to account for differing terms/structures of places for countries. For example, I cannot currently request to add a Street to the map. I can only request adding a pin for a location that the street may have been near. Can the categories of places users can contribute be expanded?
I would like to see Community badges/quarterly or yearly Rootstech awards for contributors to Places. This isn't much but may incentivize more contributions.
I would also like to be able to Follow places and see my contributions under:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/contributions/changes
Followed places could have the built-in labels: Certified, Accepted, Provisional
Maybe The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints could submit historical mission boundaries? That would be an interesting project for members of the church audience and allow missionary profiles/Custom Events to select a Standardized place.
That's a long enough list for now...
