I note you give Josip's birth place
but can you clarify if he lived his entire life in that region or if he moved elsewhere and lived most of his life anywhere else?
Knowing where to look for records can make a world of difference.

Hi, Thank you for your reply. I cant peace it together. On my Birth certificate it states father born Nova kapela Yugoslavia. On his death 1994 certificate it states born Donji Lipovac. He escaped to Italy and appears to be there for 2 years when applying to migrate to Australia. He arrived by migration ship to Australia in 1959 where I can track him. But I cant track prior. He spoke nothing of his past and if you asked, you where flat on the floor before you knew what happened. I tried via facebook to contact the Benakic name and the only reply I received was a response he was ‘Drek reply Čovek - **** or stupid man. They refuse to reply further. Thanks Anna

I am not connected with FamilySearch.
Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donji_Lipovac says Donji Lipovac may refer to:
- Donji Lipovac, Croatia, a village near Nova Kapela
so the two places you have mentioned are near to each other in Croatia, in Brod-Posavina County
Also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nova_Kapela,_Brod-Posavina_County
The FamilySearch Wiki contains a page Croatia Genealogy https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Croatia_Genealogy perhaps this will have some information which can help you.
Perhaps there is a Croatian Club or organisation you could contact where you live (Australia?) who may be able to offer advice about researching your father.
There are FamilySearch Facebook Groups in this link , scroll down to Croatia. https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/FamilySearch_Genealogy_Research_Groups
