Birth Record or something else?

US, Virginia—Vital Records, 1715–1901 [Part B][M3R1-NS4]

Initially I thought this was a birth record, but now I am not so sure because there are many entries like the following: Wm H B's slave, followed by a date. Additionally, using the same name, it looks as if the last name is Custis for this Wm H B. No information regarding location or parentage is provided. Neither is the race or color and gender.

I will stop entering information until I receive clarification for this record. Thanks for any help you can give me.

So not all names are child's name - some are parent/owner's names.

So where it says, for example, Wm H B’s slave, Wm H B is the owner, correct? Or would the owner’s name be Wm H B Custis?

My opinion: Yes, where it says " 's slave" - that is probably the owners name. Where it doesn't say that - it's probably the child's name. And I guess where it says 'child' it would be the parent's name.

    I hope that's right.

Thank you. I went to findagrave.com to check on a couple of names from my record. That helped my understanding and matched what you said. So interesting to me!
