Westchester, NY Mortgage Indexes - Corporation Names
I am indexing the above captioned records. Often, in the surname field it will have a Surname followed by a comma and the abbreviation "Inc." For example: Smith, Inc.
Then, in the given name field it may say, for example: John David
Is the correct interpretation that this is a corporation and should be entered in the Corporation field as: John David Smith, Inc.? or should it be entered as Surname: Smith and Given Names: John David and ignore the corporation designation of Inc.?

Please share your batch code. Your batch code is at the top of your indexing screen and looks like [1111-AAA]. The batch code can also be accessed by Batch ---> About Batch.

I'm so sorry, but I sent it back. I'm sure I'll find another one and I'll share that.

Not a problem. No shame in sending a batch back if you aren't comfortable with it.

I have been indexing Westchester NY mortgages also. I find it completely unnecessary to index when both mortgage and mortgagor are both companies or corps. No individuals names. I have been bypassing those entries.

These companies or corporations need to be entered in the appropriate fields - even though they are not individuals according to the instructions .

@DonaldRobinson95, these entries are required since a researcher may have a connection to either company. Please adhere to the Field Help (purple question mark) next to the company/organization fields.
Type the full mortgagee corporation or organization name as it was written. Do not correct misspellings or expand abbreviations.
It is not our job as indexers to determine what is necessary/unnecessary in each project. That's what the PI and Field Helps are there.

Your first line answer says " a researcher may have a connection to either company" ????? am I missing something ???? are we not doing this indexing for people to track their ancestors and do temple ordinances !!
Another response above from Donna Galipeau, that the companies should be indexed even though they are not individuals !! OK W H Y>>>>> Without sounding like I know it all.... I still fail to understand why.
Do the states really give a hoot ??? If so W H Y ? We are not altering their information.
I have either owned a business or managed a business all my, I have always had to work as efficiently as possible. In my humble opinion, indexing companies totally defeats the purpose and wastes valuable time

I'll give you my experience.
Several years ago, I found my maternal grandfather's World War II draft card on a different ancestry site. It listed a completely different employer than where I thought he was working at the time of registration (1942). With that information, I was able to track down old newspaper articles, a few ads, a photo of what the building looked like in the late 1960s and a photo of the employees, my grandfather included, dated 1940. I presented this to my mom and the look on her face was priceless.
This is why we index companies, so descendants (researchers) can find info that links an ancestor or two to a company or two and use that information as they wish.
If you don't want to, or refuse to, follow the PI and Field Helps, then perhaps indexing is not for you.

OK, I can see your point. I do not have a problem with listing a company name when there is also an individual name listed.
My thoughts of being unnecessary is when both mortgager and mortgagee are companies. example; ABC Mfg and First National Bank. I also see many duplicate entries, maybe a day or so different in the date. This looks like a waste to me.
I probably sounded like a grumpy old Cogger. I do not have a problem with indexing, in the past 23 months I have indexed, review and overviewed 119,700 names. I just have a problem with waste when there is so much to do. At 84 years old,,, my time is limited !!

Those are the rules for this project, Mr. Robinson, and all I can suggest is, if you don't like to do this type of record, then, maybe you should skip doing land records and try another type of record. I don't know the reason why the person who owns the records wants them done this way, but that was what they wanted included.
We all have projects that we like better than others but right now, we seem to be limited on our choices. Maybe one you will like better will come along in a little while, but until then, you can try one of the other projects and see if you like them better. Please do not give up.
By the way, I'm 84 years old too.
