Is there way to add proper steps to make uploading Gedcom’s better? I have not or will not upload a gedcom so I don’t know what steps are involved. I am working on a family that Gedcom’s have messed up to the point that one woman has 33 children. I do not think any of it is intentional, the people doing it just don’t know what they are doing.

    @DJay3

    Thank you for using the Community to post your question regarding steps for uploading GEDCOMS.

    We have many articles in our Help Center that can be found by simply typing GEDCOM in the search field.

    For the benefit of anyone who may be interested or needing help with this process, here are a few:

    This is a small sampling of what is available. We know the information is very helpful for those who read and apply the instructions.

    Best wishes.

    You are better off NOT uploading a GEDCOM

    much of the people in your GEDCOM are probably already in FamilyTree - and you run this risk of simply creating a ton of duplicates - and making a lot of people unhappy in the process.

    First find out if a person is already in Family tree - if they are not - then add them manually one by one.

    That is the safest of most recommended way to add new people to FamilySearch.

    There are already BILLIONS of people in the family tree - it is a COLLABORATIVE database

    thus chances are - most of your family tree are already in the family tree and thus no need to risk creating duplicates with a GEDCOM.

    Having experimented with GEDCOM files myself, I have found the system extremely poor at identifying potential duplicates. I have had several occasions when I have added a person only for the system to identify a potential duplicate immediately after I have added the new person.

    So I fully endorse Dennis' comment not to add names to Family Tree via a GEDCOM.

    Count me in to the no GEDCOM uploads camp, other than to the Genealogies section then Stop there period.

    Please, if there is a way to stop people from uploading their GEDCOM into Family Tree, PLEASE do it!

    The extra work and confusion caused by the duplicates created is very frustrating!

    Thank you!
