    I have also found this approach very helpful -- in my own brick wall of tracing my YANCEY ancestral line back

    instead of just focusing on my direct known yancey line -- rather I looked for the very earliest Yanceys and traced their line forward in time -- - and this was able to make reasonable progress in finding and linking to a few more generations because I was looking at the family as a whole -- and not just my direct known line.
