Faster loading of VA Master Index cards?
I am researching WW1 veteran Orville John Seaton. I wanted to view his VA Master Index card. So a search on your web site directed me to https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:WWLY-BDW2 .
That page contains a transcript of PARTS of the card, but it is not complete. It also shows a small image of the actual card to the left. In order to view the actual card I have to click on the box "View Original Document". When I do that it takes me to another page which tells me that his card is #6426 of 31176 entries on the film. It then starts to load the film at entry #1 and goes up to entry #6426. But it took 47 minutes with my WiFi connection to get to entry #6426.
Is there a way to get to the card faster? Since the actual card (not just a representation) appeared on the previous page but was too small to read I would hope I could just click on the small version to view the full sized card. But I cannot. How can I view the full sized card quicker?
This was not the only example, it takes a long time to load any image on one of those film strips if it is a long way from the start of the film.
Thanks,
Paul Roales

I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
Just in passing ...
Unfortunately ...
I humbly venture to suggest, that the problem/issue lies, with your INTERNET WiFi Connection, rather than with 'FamilySearch'.
I accessed the URL that you provided; and, the "Image" of the 'Card"; where, it only took a few "Seconds" to load, certainly NOT, 45 "Minutes".
I would also venture to suggest, that to get "Images" to "Load" FASTER, you may need a "Better" INTERNET Connection.
Of course, depending on you locality. that may be both, difficult; and, more expensive.
I know that 'FamilySearch' is continually improving ...
But ...
That Said ...
'FamilySearch', can ONLY do so much ...
One is ALWAYS "Limited", by the (Speed; and, Reliability) of one's INTERNET Connection.
That is WHY 'FamilySearch' developed "Family Tree Lite" ...
ie. For those Users/Patrons, with slow/poor INTERNET Connection ...
But ...
That Said ...
I DO NOT think, that "Family Tree Lite", will be of any use to you, in the case, of the "Loading" of "Images".
Just my thoughts.
I am sorry ...
I know, that this certainly does not help/assist; but, I hope, that this may provide you with, some additional, insight; and, perspective; and, another avenue to pursue.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3MW-H7R3-R?cc=2968245
That's a direct link to image 6426 of 31176 on film 105291244, showing an index card for SEATON ORVILLE JOHN. It took about fifteen seconds to load. (We haven't upgraded our internet in 15 years, so it doesn't exactly count as "fast" any more.)
Alternately, you could try the thumbnail link: https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/105291244?i=6425. You'll need to click the "view single image" button (the third one of the four in the top left corner of the image window) to see the image.

It MAY be poor WiFi I do not know. But when I click on Julia Szent-Györgyi's link https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3MW-H7R3-R?cc=2968245 it takes me to https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3MW-H7R3-R?mode=g&cc=2968245 (notice slight difference in address) it starts loading at image #1 and loads one at a time, it still takes 45 minutes to get to #6426. It does NOT load #6426 immediately. On my computer it is NOT a direct link to #6426.
Also when I click on her thumbnail link https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/105291244?i=6425 and press the "view single image" link it still loads the small images one at a time from 1 to 6426.
So what else can anyone suggest?

I just noticed that the when I click on the thumbnail link it adds &cc=2968245 to the end of the address in the page it sends me to. So for some reason both links are adding something to the address that they are sending me to. I tried removing the extra letters from the address but when I go to the correct address my computer always adds the extra letters automatically.
So what do I do about that?

Just in passing ...
Your link of: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:WWLY-BDW2 , is the URL, for the "Index".
Whereas ...
The link of: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3MW-H7R3-R?cc=2968245&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AWWLY-BDW2 , is the initial URL, to access the "Image"(ie. Original Document).
Which ...
When accessed, eventually, takes one through to the link of: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3MW-H7R3-R?mode=g&cc=2968245&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AWWLY-BDW2 , the actual URL. of the "Image".
ie. Image Number 6426, of 31176 Images, in "Image Group Number (DGS)" 105291244 ...
And, for me, that only takes Seconds, NOT Minutes.
So ...
That Said ...
'Yes' ... like it or not ... Your Problem/Issue, is Your INTERNET Connection ...
ie. The problem/issue is NOT 'FamilySearch'; and, NOT really much, that 'FamilySearch' can do.
[ "Slow' Seed INTERNET, mean SLOW "Loading"; whereas, "High" Speed INTERNET, means FASTER "Loading" ]
Just my thoughts.

OK help me understand this. Are you saying that because my WiFi is slow (it claims to be 2.4 G) it is automatically sending me to the start of the film instead of the actual image?

@paulroales1 Sometimes, the loading of a large reel, such as this one with over 30K images, is very slow. Last night when I checked the record you mentioned, it took a long time to load - over 3 minutes. Several other members of my household were also online, including video streaming. It's not always how fast your connection is but what else is happening on that connection.

In answer to you last 'Question"; and, further to; and, in support, of what 'Áine' has already proffered ...
Your INTERNET Connection, has NOTHING to do, with HOW the "Image", is accessed.
But ...
IF, there are OTHER "Household" demands (from Other Household members), other than yourself; THEN, the "Load"/"Strain" on your INTERNET Connection, may be great, which will also, put "strain" on; and, slow, the INTERNET Connection.
Plus, an "Image", that is amongst, a LARGE number of "Images", WILL take longer, to access.
And ...
Again ...
Like it or not ...
The problem/issue, is NOT 'FamilySearch'; and, there is NOT really much, that 'FamilySearch' can do.
"Slow' Seed INTERNET, mean SLOW "Loading"; whereas, "High" Speed INTERNET, means FASTER "Loading".
But, even then, much is also governed, by the "Load"/"Strain", on the INTERNET Connection; when, used by ALL members of one's Household, at the same time.
Just my thoughts.

@paulroales1, there's a lot of voodoo that goes on in the resolving of URLs, but in general, anything after an ampersand is optional from the user's end. The server may or may not add things, depending on how it's set up. (The whys and wherefores of all this are rather murky to me.)
The "mode=g&" part shows up in the URL for me for a short bit, but when the image finishes loading, it goes away.
The server adds "&cc=2968245" at the end of the thumbnail link for me, too, but I know from experience that I don't need to keep track of it -- I can use just the simple human-parseable "phrasing" of familysearch / search / film / [film number, padded if needed to 9 digits] ?i= [image number minus one].
I wonder if the impression you have of it starting loading at image 1 is browser-dependent, or if it's all a matter of bandwidth. Have you tried with a different browser? (I use Firefox, in Windows 10.)

I am NOT blaming Family Search. I am just trying to understand what is "Fast" internet. I am the ONLY user of my WiFi modem (rated at 2.4G), there is no one else in the house. So how fast in mbs download do I need to have to have "Fast" internet? I tested mine and it say about 15 mbs download speed. If that is too slow can I improve on that with a better/newer modem? Or will upgrading my subscription with Cox solve the problem? Or what?

As no one, has responded, to you last 'Comment' ...
Just in passing ...
You will NEED to get some "Technical" advice ...
eg.
I just did a "Speed" Test, on my INTERNET ...
Late Last night / Early this morning: Download 55 Mbps / Upload 21 Mbps ( LESS, in the Household using ... )
Today ( Sunday ), Noon: Download 31 Mbps / Upload 17 Mbps ( MORE, in the Household using ... )
So ...
You certainly may, need, to "Upgrade", your "Modem"; or, "Subscription"; or, BOTH ...
But ...
Whatever happens ...
Speak to, a number, of DIFFERENT "Providers"; and, correlate, ALL, their advise ...
Just my thoughts.
Brett
ps: Everything depends, on what you can afford ...
pps: Plus, of course, the availability of "Service", in your particular "Locality" ...
....... [ Some areas/localities, are better than others ... ]

Thanks. It does appear that speed is my problem. I'll have to start to check around and see what other options I have. I may even have to upgrade my computer or buy another one. Perhaps I would be better off doing my research at the public library which has fast Internet service free. I'll try that to see if I can download Seaton's card before I do anything else.
