Australia, Albany—Inward Passenger Lists, 1873–1924 [M3KF-Q7F]

In this batch the passenger leave from Plymouth and arrive at Adelaide Melbourne and Sydney. I am reviewing and the arrival place is blank. Should I put Australia, or is that already known.

Thanks, Sandy Evans.

    Thanks Melissa,

Thats my gut feeling too. Indexers are presuming the arrival place from the Batch page Header. All of them arrive in Albany and can go on to other Australian ports to disembark. Some come from Australia, embark in Sydney and go on to Melbourne or Adelaide and never arrived with the ship in Albany.

    Thanks,

    Sandy Evans,

    from New Zealand.

    Hi @Sandyevans6 & @maryellenstevensbarnes1,

I'm nowhere near as experienced as @Melissa S Himes or @Ontymay! But happy to help out with Australian records, if I can.

The Australia, Albany Inward Passenger Lists have certainly caused some confusion, but the Project Instructions are quite clear (although it took me a few reads to fully accept them!) and need to be followed, so the Arrival fields needs to be blank if only one date is on the record.

    All the best, Patrick

    Hi Sandy,

Unfortunately, only folks in Australia and possibly New Zealand have access to these batches. Since it is now the evening of April 19th in the US, I will try to answer without seeing the batch.

If the form has a column for arrival place, then it would be indexed. But, if the form states all three ports, I would be inclined to leave the arrival place blank. There is over 1000 nautical miles between Adelaide and Sydney. Australia doesn't need to indexed as it in indeed known.

Check you examples in the project instructions, but, my gut feeling is that blank is appropriate in this case.

Also @Ontymay is very helpful on the Australian batches. You can tag people by typing the @ and clicking on the name that you want to tag! Now they are both "it" and might come around to answer your question soon!
