Request to correct indexing of U.S. Census Slave Schedule, 1860, Washington County, North Carolina
For U.S. Census Slave Schedule, 1860, Washington County, North Carolina, "Other" district, there are 26 pages. Starting on page 22, there is a listing for slave owner, Josiah Collins. The list of the people that he enslaved who he is linked to is incomplete. He enslaved over 300 people, continuing to page 26. I request that these enslaved people be indexed to him rather than to unknown enslavers. This will help descendants find their ancestors.
"By the 1860s, Somerset consisted of 14,500 acres (about 2,000 acres cultivated), housed 328 slaves, and included over 50 structures (including a hospital, a kitchen complex, a laundry, and a dairy). - https://northcarolinahistory.org/encyclopedia/josiah-collins-iii-1808-1863/

@Anne986 FamilySearch does not currently re-open closed indexing projects to correct errors or omissions. Fortunately, this census schedule provides images users can look at to find the missing details.
You might note that the only name that was entered on the original census form was the slave owner, Josiah Collins. Since his name only appears on image 22, that is the page the index sends a person to if they want to see information about him and those he enslaved. The information about enslaved persons only provides age, sex, and color of the person--no names, so no clear way to identify each person in an index.
We recognize how difficult it can be to track down ancestors who were enslaved. Wish this census schedule had included names of these people so it could have been more useful.
