No Question - Want to report a city listing site for New York Birth Index

For those indexing or reviewing New York Birth Indexes, there is a alphabetical city listing at <https://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/publication/orpts/swis-alpha>, or it may be easier to do as I do, google search or search engine search "new york town listings" and the site should show in the listings and the title will have "tax" in title name

It wasn't a question, I only reported a place to look for towns and cities listed alphabetically in the State of New York as an aid in indexing or reviewing New York Birth Indexes - which indexes are difficult reading and the cities are abbreviated and the indexer is to expand the abbreviation, according to birth index instructions.

@cacoethes scribendi - Since many NY birth indexes are from the1880's, I find it easier to use wikipedia for small villages/towns, rural areas

Google and Wikipedia are great for a lot of things, but when it comes to indexing, we are to type what we see. The Field Help (purple question mark) states the following:

Suggested localities may appear as you type. If the suggestions do not match the image, type what you see, and press Tab.

I have one right now with the abbreviation of "Sch". That could be anything from Schaghticoke to Schermerhorn Landing to Schenectady, but since I'm not for certain, I follow the field help, enter "Sch" and press tab.

The drop down menu for the New York Birth Indexes drives me a little bonkers! I type fairly rapidly and the drop down index will then select something I have not even typed. Suddenly it has added to the name or changed it completely - this happens when I am reviewing batches also. Is there some way to turn this off?

    Thanks, Susan

In your data entry screen, click Batch

    Click on Settings

A dialog box will open. Go to Auto Complete and select Turn OFF for all fields, then Apply. You're all set.

Also, if you want to keep what you type, use a Tab instead of Enter when you encounter a field with that behavior . Sometimes even with Auto Complete OFF, certain fields persist in showing values . I haven’t figured out it’s a bug or if drop-downs are outside Auto Complete’s purview, but Tab should still overcome and accept what you type.

From the Indexing Keyboard Shortcuts. It uses the term “auto-suggest”

    “Since 12/07/2017 (“Universal Input”).

Enter and Tab are the biggest differences:

    • Enter accepts the highlighted auto-suggest value, if one exists, and advances to the next field.
    • Tab keeps only what you typed and ignores the auto-suggested values and advances to the next field.
    • Right Arrow accepts the auto-suggested value and keeps you on the same field so you can keep typing. Auto-suggest continues to make suggestions as you type.”
