Question
One of my Dad’s cousins, Oscar Lee Hayes, was born Oscar Lee Richards. (I just found his birth certificate on Ancestry). When his Mother, my great-aunt Dolly, married Charles Raymond Hayes, either he was adopted by Charles Raymond Hayes, or just went by Hayes after that. Every record I have seen except his birth certificate he goes by the last name of Hayes. In the tree I am thinking I should put him by his birth name, and then under the “Also Known As” put Hayes.

I would put the main name as the one by which he was known for most of his life, so - in this case - his birth name as the Alternate one. Many users disagree with this practice and insist on always showing the birth name as the main one. When, for example, you have 20 sources attached - 19 with his later name and just 1 with his birth name included - it seems (to me) unhelpful to input his primary name as his birth name.
