Why aren't only Exact matches being produced when using this search criteria?

Up till now, I have had no problems in reducing my results when I use the "Exact" options. A Mary J Alderson was born in the United States in 1868 but found in the England & Wales census in 1881, but not 1891. Assuming she married in the 1884-1891 period I have carried out a search for any "Mary J*" (no surname), born in America (or United States - results are the same) between 1866 & 1870. I am getting 249 results, the second of which matches my inputs - as do a handful of other results further down the list - but why am I getting all those results with a "Durham, England" birthplace, when I have specified a United States birth?

Whilst many users complain of getting results that do not match (since the introduction of the new interface), I have not had a similar experience until today.
