Indexing Ontario tax records - missing ages

I was indexing a batch for Ontario tax records which was missing the ages column- a pretty key field needed to make the indexing useful for the project. The reference images before and after had the same problem. I returned the batch, hoping it would let me enter a reason, but it did not. Hoping this information can get to who it needs to get to.

If the image didn't have the age column, then you would mark the age field <blank>. Many times we index images that don't have all the information available that would make the index more useful to the end-user. Just being able to search on a name gives the researcher the ability to see the image on FamilySearch, or go to a website, or physical location where they can view the image.

Hopefully when they take the pictures they understand what information is important to capture. I don't know how many images came out that way, or if it would be worth getting pictures of those pages over again. Thanks!

Here are a couple of interesting articles on how the images are captured.

Indexers are transcribers, not translators. If the record doesn't include an age column - and I've come across several - there is nothing to be captured by the photographer. If it isn't there, ctrl B, and go to the next field.

But in this case the columns are numbered, and column 9 was missing because it's in the fold of the book (they didn't open it up enough), and all the remaining columns match to other batches I've done and to a sample image also I believe, where field 9 is the age.

Yes, it happens alot when they are trying to photograph books and information on the bound edge is unreadable. Unfortunate, but, common.
