Can I create my own new index on a document I found?

I'm new to this and I found a document that could use indexing. When I search in my batch projects, it doesn't appear. Can I add my own indexing to this document or will it not let me until I have more practice?

Thanks

Hi Ralph! Great question, but, sorry you can't add your own indexing, or create an index, or request something to be indexed. Maybe someday that will happen, but, for now, we can only select indexing projects from the ones that are offered in web-indexing.

You can create a source and then probably provide your own transcription (index) of it. Asking someone else to review your index for accuracy would be an excellent next step. This would be outside the "Web Indexing" part of FamilySearch and instead would be in the "Family Tree" part of FamilySearch.

    See the following related article:

I have done this for a diary of one of my ancestors and a personal life sketch written by my great-grandfather. The source was already uploaded, but no one had transcribed (indexed) the document yet. I created a "Story" in "Memories" where I put my transcription, along with a link to the original. It took some time, but was very meaningful.

Please let us know if this helps.
