How do I obtain a French death certificate if I am not a French citizen?
My husband and I recently learned of the death of his brother in France on September 11, 2021. We do not have any details of his passing, other than finding the death notice. Apparently you have to have a French ID to obtain a death certificate. Would anyone know how to acquire the death certificate of Drayton Gardner Nuttall, born 9 February 1938 and died 11 September 2021 in Perpignan ( Pyrénées-Orientales )? Drayton had been a resident of France for a little more than 15 years and had dual citizenship - United States and France.

Yes, we were hopeful when we found that website that we could obtain the certificate, but when a French speaking niece went to the site she learned that, indeed, you have to enter through one of the portals given, which require an ID.
The suggestion about contacting the French Embassy (the closest to me, I believe, is in San Francisco, California, U.S.) is a good one. I hadn't thought about that.
Another thought I had was to work with a friend or acquaintance who does have a French ID -- I've got one or two possibilities in mind.

According to this site, there is no requirement to have a French ID - https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F1444
According to the Q&A, anyone can request, no justification or id required, and no fee.

If you look at the request process you have to log in through specific French portals, so unless you already had a French ID of some sort, in practice I do not see how you would be able to log in.
Perhaps the French Embassy in MNuttall's country could offer advice.

Wouldn't you know. . .as soon as I ask the question -- we received the death certificate via email from an heir-search company this morning.
