Question regarding indexing batch #M3J2-M8X
This is a batch of christening/baptisms in Lancaster, England. The question is regarding the names of the children being christened: some of them have two names listed, such as "Edward Bramwell" iin the first entry. At first, I thought "Bramwell" was a surname, but it seemed strange that it was different than the parents' surname. After seeing that entry #5 was "Henry Thomas," I thought it might be a first and middle name. Entry # 6 is "Walter Townsend." Bramwell and Townsend seem to be unusual given names, but as I thought about it, I remembered that sometimes parents would give their child (especially sons) the maiden name of the mother as a middle name. What do you think?

Hello,
Yes, I would index these names as Given names. It is not at all uncommion for a child to be given a Family surname as a given name. (My husband's second given name is his mother's maiden name) . The instructions say "if you cannot determine if a name is a given name or a surname, type it in this field" i.e. the given name field.
I hope this helps.
Hilary.
