Hello, there is a note dated 10 Sep 1965, #279763, correcting the first name of the bride from Mamie to Marie. How would I index this? Thanks, Cheryl

Hi @Cheryl Hasychak . Your Share Batch Code should be M9LV-9HH. Bottom line - I (personally) would index both versions of the name with an Or between them. I say this because the old information is "corrected" but not crossed-out, and the correction is separate, and later. See the citation at the bottom.

The correction note (dated 9-10-65) is from 41 years after the original record and could have referred to a later legal name change from Mamie to Marie. I don't see any harm in mentioning both. The Researchers will get to decide what's what, perhaps with more info than we have. Someone else could take the GIG guidance below and insist on replacing Mamie with Marie since the GIG uses the word correction too. Use your best judgment - I've given you mine.

Your project instructions do not have a General Indexing Guidelines (GIG) section like most do today, and your PI's link to the General Indexing Guidelines is broken. But below is the GIG guidance on this issue from one of my projects:

Crossed-Out, Corrected, Canceled, or Void Information

When information was crossed out, corrected, canceled, or marked void, follow the instructions for "crossed out" that match the situation.

When information was crossed out and then replaced, type the new information in the appropriate fields.

When information was crossed out, was not replaced, and can be read, type the crossed-out information.

When information was crossed out, was not replaced, and cannot be read, mark the field as unreadable by pressing Ctrl+U, or on the indexing toolbar, click the

     icon.

Hi John, thanks very much for the information. I was leaning towards using "or" so both names would be more informative for anyone researching that record. And extra thanks for sending the CCC or Void information. I've been doing this about a month and had not seen this... Cheryl

Hi Cheryl. You're welcome. Check out a different project so you can see the General Indexing Guidelines.
