James Wharf MGDT-3DZ abt 1799 - 1837 research advice please?
Hello ! Ive been at a full stop with James for well over a decade and wondered if someone with more knowledge and experience would kindly point me in the right direction to find a parent. He was born abt 1799 ,I think in Lincolnshire ,England . He lived in Boston , Lincolnshire and was married to Susannah Bailey at St Botolphs , Boston Lincs on 27 Jan 1822.
One of the witnesses to the marriage was Lucy Wharf. I am also unable to link Lucy to my tree.
There were more than one James Wharf who where born about that time who appear to fit the correct profile but are not ( one being a convict sent to Australia)
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank You
Graham Wharf

Taken a look. A few initial thoughts
- Have you looked for an image of his first marriage? This should tell you his residence at the time of marriage.
- If you have not already done so, I suggest making a list of the candidates you have already found with a note of the distance the parish of christening is from Boston, if it is not Boston itself. Try to eliminate as many as possible, e.g. by looking for burials or marriages in the parish of christening.
- Have you tried DNA? This is by no means guaranteed to work but stands a reasonable chance. Your aim is to find someone with a DNA match descended from a sibling of James (assuming he had some). I can advise further on this if of interest.
- Is there a will? Unlikely unless he had some money and, even if he had one, it may not help you.
- Took a look on Ancestry. Someone there has chosen James Wharfe, son of Frances Wharfe, chr 28 Jan 1799 in Gosberton, Lincolnshire (9.8 miles from Boston - a bit far in my view but certainly possible). Of course this may not be correct.
- Have you contacted others who have contributed to his or his wife's records on FamilySearch? You may be able to collaborate in your searches.
- You could try posting this question to the England Research Group. You need to join the group first before you can post. https://community.familysearch.org/en/group/45-england-genealogy-research
- His wife Susannah is showing as chr in Tattershall (11.5 miles from Boston). Are you comfortable that this is correct? Bailey is quite a common name.
- The middle name of one of the children is Wilks. The most common source of middle names in those times in my experience is the maiden name of a mother or grandmother. Have you looked for marriages between a Wharf and a Wilks in the area?
Hope this helps. Feel free to post again if you need further assistance.
Regards
Graham Buckell (you have a good name!)

Graham,
thank you SO much for taking the time out to reply,it’s much appreciated. I’m on Ancestry and have seen the Gosberton birth , but am not sure. I do have a copy of James and Susannahs marriage by Banns.
I hadn’t considered DNA ….You’ve given me plenty to think about and I will look at all the points you’ve suggested. Thanks again!
kind regards,
Graham
