M/F not stated in document
United States—Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916–1939 [Part L][M3XD-GSY]
male or female is not stated on these documents for passports from Malta. While reviewing I am seeing that people are recording M/F, I'm assuming that they are refering to the picture for referencing M/F, is this acceptable?

Your subject references Muster rolls, yet you talk about Malta passports?
In the Malta passport application has a picture you can often determine the gender. Or if the information for wife/husband is filled out (section A(c). Note: The picture might not always be an obvious gender.

By this time you may have submitted your batch, but for future reference, on the upper corner of the sex entry open the purple circle with the question mark, it opens the Field help with instructions: please follow the instructions.
- Index the sex only if it was specifically recorded or you can tell what it was from relationship terms, such as "son" or "daughter," titles or terms, or other evidence in the language.
- Do not assume the sex of a person based on given names
At the bottom of the image , it says Declaration of the said Mr, Mrs, Miss, Her, Him that would indicate the gender or sex of the applicant.
