Hi Merilyn.
Even John Smith Jr will not be indexed if the instructions say not to index duplicate names (and supposing there is no Suffix or Terms and Titles Field). But he's not "lost." Even with only one instance of John Smith, e.g., to represent John Smith and John Smith Jr, the Researchers will find both. Likewise for John Smith the plumber or John Smith the blacksmith, etc.. We are not capturing the spot on the image where John Smith and John Smith Jr or the others can be found. The Researchers are drawn to the image via searching and finding your indexing of one instance of the name and need to do a little work to find their John Smith via the other contextual information on the image.
