I am indexing United States—Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916–1939 [Part L][M3XC-Z27] and want to know if I index the names of the military officers listed in the remarks column.

EXAMPLE: "and reports to Lt. Henry R Prescott"

Great question! We do not index the names in the remarks. Their names will be listed in their own company.

    Thanks for asking for clarification!

Below is what I found in the Project Instructions:

    • Index all military records, including muster rolls, monthly rosters, losses lists, transfers lists, and all other types of military records.
    • Do not index the name of the person preparing the record of monthly rolls and monthly rosters unless the person is also listed on the roster or roll itself.

Since the Military Officer mentioned in the remark is not on the month roll or roster, I would not index that name.
