I am reviewing. I know that "Do" means "ditto". In this batch the indexer "dittoed" the name on the
line below. See the second line of the image. The indexer entered Tappan, John G for entry 2. It is also done on lines 4,9,10,11. Is this correct or should entry 2 be
Thacker, Peter O? I have seen indexers do it both ways. Does "Do" always mean "ditto the name below"? Or can it mean "ditto the name above"?

I just realized this is a mute point on this batch since the name is the only thing I can index. So I would index it once as a unique name.

A line below another with Do or Ditto means it's the same as the line above. However, the same name would not be indexed twice. The Proj. Inst: "Index each unique name. Some names may be duplicated. When names are exact duplicates, index only the first instance of the name listed. Skip the other exact duplicates and then index the next unique name. When the middle initials or the given names or surnames are spelled differently, please index these unique names." Even if they do get indexed, the system spits them out because they're exactly the same as the record before it.
That name looks like Thacher rather than Thacker. Note the k's in other names.
