Here's an interview with Jason Pierson and discussion about indexing, including what's coming in the future.

submit the batch if you havent already, then on to the next! Once youve indexed 1000 names, you will get reviewer status and you can start reviewing other peoples indexed batches to check for mistakes.

the work is pretty uneventful day to day, but its fulfilling. hope you enjoy indexing!

My guess is that you are stuck with a batch that won't submit because you have pre-set entries that are unused. Do watch the videos, but, the quick solution if the batch won't submit and you have unused entries that need to be deleted is: Click on the Trash Can icon, select "all blank entries", click delete. You should now be able to submit your batch.
